October Books: 4/5 (Don’t Go There and The Eighth Detective)

Please ignore the fact that I’m down to the dredges of my non-rolodex cards.
So, it’s the day before MileHiCon. How are we feeling?
Honestly, not great.
Not sure why I’m having so much anxiety this year. I like MileHiCon, and I think the people who run it like me too. I get time to myself to work on projects, I see friends from all around who I don’t tend to see otherwise, and it generally helps me feel like a “real” author.
But maybe that’s it–this year hasn’t been great, writing wise. Last year wasn’t either. I haven’t published a longer work in a few years.
But, like, you can write one book ever and still be an author. I’m sure there’s ton of people out there who have coasted on books they wrote twenty years ago, or written one, called it good, and still considered themselves an author and done the convention circuit. So why do I, with four novels, one novella, two short story collections, eleven writing books, and who knows how many shorts published in anthologies and magazines, feel so inadequate?
Questions, questions. No answers right now.
I wrote the first two sentences on the generation ship story, but haven’t made much progress past that. I suspect the preparations for the convention are taking the time I would be using for writing. And I have made progress–I designed bookmarks, fought with print places for an hour-ish (I must make a note to order things in September for the convention), decided I was not going to pay more than the bookmarks cost in shipping to get them by the con, and ended up figuring out how to print them myself. (Are they slightly not lined up front to back? Yes, but not badly.) After discussion with others, I made a flyer saying Hallowed Hill was sold out with QR codes to other places to buy it. I got everything together I need to host my autograph table (although I better double check my business cards and restock as necessary). I’ve pondered my outfits (I’m doing a closet cosplay panel on Sunday, and it feels like I should represent), and started my panel preparation.
But I’m still feeling off.
Maybe I’ll get there and feel better. Maybe I’m stressed because it’s in a new location that I don’t know.
Well. We shall see how we are doing tomorrow.
I hope you’re doing well, squiders. See you next week.
